Beyond the Moves

Dancehall · Cultural Education · Embodiment · Critical Reflection

Going Beyond the Moves

Beyond the Moves is one of my signature programmes: a research-based and embodied approach to Dancehall that brings together cultural education, movement and critical reflection.

Created from my work as a choreographer, researcher and facilitator, the programme goes beyond the physical practice of dance to create a deeper and more conscious engagement with Dancehall.

It is not here to replace Jamaican knowledge, Jamaican teachers or existing Dancehall practices.

It is an add-on: an invitation to open the lens, contextualise, question, feel and engage with Dancehall with greater cultural awareness and responsibility.

The Question

What changes when understanding becomes part of the practice?

Dancehall is not simply a collection of movements to learn and reproduce.

The movement carries histories, social realities, cultural knowledge, attitudes and ways of relating to the body.

Beyond the Moves creates space to look at those layers — and to consider how cultural understanding can transform the way we move, teach, participate and connect.

Understanding Before Movement

Beyond the Moves responds to a need I have observed within contemporary Dancehall spaces: creating more room for cultural context, awareness and reflection alongside physical practice.

The programme brings together theoretical and practical components.

The theoretical dimension looks at:

  • the history and roots of Dancehall
  • its social, political and spiritual contexts
  • resistance and cultural expression
  • questions of representation and misrepresentation
  • cultural transmission and appropriation
  • discrimination and cultural awareness
  • community-building
  • critical reflection on the way Dancehall is taught, shared and experienced outside Jamaica

The practical dimension brings these questions back into the body.

Through movement, participants work with groove, musicality, vibration and intention, developing a more conscious relationship between movement and the culture from which it emerges.

The two dimensions are not separate.

We learn through the body, and we allow what we learn to change the way we move.

The Experience

Beyond the Moves combines:

  • Cultural Context
Understanding where Dancehall comes from and the histories, communities and realities that have shaped it.
  • Critical Reflection
Developing tools to question how Dancehall is represented, taught, consumed and transmitted.
  • Embodied Practice
Working through groove, musicality, vibration and intention rather than approaching movement only as choreography.
  • Dialogue
Creating space for questions, exchange and reflection around cultural awareness and responsibility.
  • Connection
Considering how deeper understanding can transform the relationship between dancers, teachers, communities and the culture they engage with.

Two Ways to Experience Beyond the Moves

3-Hour Introductory Workshop

A 3-hour interactive workshop offering an introduction to the approach behind Beyond the Moves.

It combines theoretical exploration, cultural context, embodied practice and reflection.

This format can work particularly well within:

  • dance festivals
  • workshops and intensives
  • Dancehall events
  • dance schools and studios
  • cultural programmes
  • educational settings
  • community spaces

It offers participants a chance to step beyond choreography and begin asking different questions about the culture, the movement and their own practice.

8-Session Programme

The full 8-session programme allows participants to go deeper into the questions introduced in the workshop.

With more time for movement, cultural education, dialogue and reflection, the programme creates space for a sustained process rather than a one-off encounter.

It can be adapted to the needs of:

  • dance schools and studios
  • universities and educational institutions
  • cultural organisations
  • festivals and longer programmes
  • community initiatives
  • artist development programmes
  • Dancehall communities

The 8-session format is particularly suited to organisations looking to integrate cultural learning and embodied practice into an existing Dancehall or dance programme.

Who Is It For?

Beyond the Moves can be adapted for different levels of dance experience and different contexts.

It can be relevant to:

  • Dancers & Movement Practitioners
Looking to deepen their understanding of Dancehall beyond choreography.
  • Dance Teachers & Facilitators
Interested in bringing greater cultural context and awareness into their teaching practice.
  • Cultural & Educational Organisations
Looking for a programme that connects movement with history, culture and critical reflection.
  • Dancehall Communities
Creating spaces for exchange, learning and deeper engagement with the culture.
  • Cultural Lovers & Curious Participants
Who want to understand more about Dancehall while experiencing it through their own bodies.

My Approach

My work sits between dance, cultural research, embodied practice and education.

I approach Dancehall not only through choreography, but through the histories, contexts and embodied knowledge that give the movement meaning.

This also means recognising the limits of my own position.

Beyond the Moves does not claim to speak for Jamaican culture or replace knowledge held within Jamaican Dancehall communities.

Instead, it creates a space to learn, contextualise, question and engage more responsibly with the practice.

The programme is designed as a complement to existing Dancehall knowledge and teaching — opening conversations that can deepen, rather than replace, the physical practice.

Bring Beyond the Moves to Your City

Beyond the Moves is available for invitations and collaborations internationally.

I work with dance festivals, studios, cultural organisations, universities, educational institutions, community projects and Dancehall spaces to bring the programme into different cities and contexts.

The format can be adapted according to the audience, setting and time available — from a 3-hour introductory workshop to the full 8-session programme.
