Reconnecting Through the Waist

Soulful Waistline is a signature movement workshop centred on the waist, rhythm and embodied expression.

It goes beyond learning movements.

The workshop invites participants to reconnect with the pelvis as a source of energy, strength, creativity and personal expression, while developing greater awareness of how they move and inhabit their bodies.

At its heart is a simple invitation:

What becomes possible when we stop seeing the waist only through the lens of a capitalist version of sensuality or sexuality, and begin to experience it as a source of embodied knowledge and power?

The Cultural Body

Waist and pelvic movements have long been part of African and Afro-diasporic movement traditions.

Across different contexts, they can carry relationships to rhythm, celebration, ritual, community, sensuality, identity, healing and expression.

Soulful Waistline draws inspiration from this richness, moving across African and Caribbean practices, from ritual and social dances to carnival and dancehall.

The workshop creates space to experience these movements while questioning the ways bodies and particularly movements associated with black bodies, the hips and pelvis are often looked at, interpreted and hypersexualised.

Rather than removing sensuality from the practice, the aim is to reclaim the body as a place of agency, pleasure, creativity and self-expression.

The Experience

The workshop combines:

  • Movement
Exploring waist and pelvic movement through African and Afro-diasporic dance practices.
  • Rhythm
Developing a relationship with musicality, pulse, groove and the movement of the body.
  • Body Awareness
Using breath and embodied attention to become more present to sensation and movement.
  • Sensuality & Expression
Creating space to experience sensuality as a dimension of embodied expression rather than something defined by an external gaze.
  • Cultural Context
Connecting movement to the traditions and cultural practices from which it emerges.

What Participants Are Invited to Explore

Depending on the context, a session can touch on:

  • the relationship between rhythm and the pelvis
  • grounding and embodied confidence
  • movement quality and fluidity
  • sensuality and personal expression
  • the cultural meanings carried through movement
  • the gaze placed on Black bodies
  • reconnecting with pleasure and creativity
  • moving with greater awareness and intention
  • The joy of our freeing our waistline

The emphasis is not on achieving a particular aesthetic.

It is on developing a more conscious relationship with the body and its movement.
